BA5K

This morning I ran the BA5K with my BFF and a few other friends. MH’s son Damian was diagnosed with biliary atresia shortly after he was born and was hospitalized for over a month, recovering from surgery. Imagine the surprise when we found out this rare disease has a 5k to raise money and awareness!

IMG_3547

Damian was a great sport and had a great “run” in the jogging stroller. He was popular with the ladies, too! Everyone wanted to come over and squeeze his chubby cheeks.

IMG_3553

My mom made us shirts for the event. On the front, it read “Team Damian” and the back said “I love someone with biliary atresia.” MH made a shirt for Damian that said “I am loved.” The shirts were a huge hit and we received many a compliment. Thanks, mom!

Overall, the event was well-organized and a lot of fun. We’ll definitely be back next year.

Afterwards, we went out to lunch at Raging Burrito, where we enjoyed delicious Mexican fare.

I totally forgot to snap a picture of my Mediterranean Quesadilla, but it was delicious.

This beautiful sticky face kept us company. :)

I was way overdue for a new pair of running shoes, so we stopped into Big Peach Running Co. to get my run analyzed. I learn I overpronate quite a bit, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (correct me if I’m wrong!), but I bought some new shoes that should help with that. I stuck with the asics, but switched to a pretty purple color. :)

I also picked up some of my new favorite fuel. I had this on a long run last week and loved it. I haven’t been able to find it since so I was excited when I saw some today.

Now time to go hang out with this precious baby.

10 miles on the training plan tomorrow. Wish us luck!

Giving New Meaning to Local

Yesterday me and two co-workers went to High Cotton, a local to South Carolina restaurant, for a drink. We were a little bit too late for happy hour, though. :(

IMG_0498

Keeping with the local theme, I got the Greenville Cocktail.

IMG_0497

It was a little too sweet for my taste, but that didn’t stop me from slurping it down.

IMG_0499

Afterwards, I changed into my running clothes and did a speed workout up and down Main Street. I’ve lost it. Seriously.

Speaking of losing it, I tweeted yesterday that I was giving up coffee.

Today, I had an iced coffee. Fail.

IMG_0500

Oh well. There’s always tomorrow.

New York Bagels

I’m not perfect.

DSC_0077

I bought these bagels without checking the label. I get home and discover they have HFCS in them.

Oh well. I’ll survive.

DSC_0075

They’re still freaking delicious.

And sometimes I really, really, really miss New York.

Is this normal?

Ok. So. Guys.

I haven’t even run my first marathon yet. I haven’t even run my first HALF marathon yet. And I’m researching more marathons to run. I’m nuts.

IMG_0475

I’m going to enter the NYC Marathon 2012 lottery pool. I mean, why not? It’s a year away, I love New York, I possibly love marathons? I’ve read that if you get denied 3 years in a row, they let you in automatically your 4th year. Or maybe in between now and then I’ll get super speedy and run a sub-3:30 marathon. Possibility of that happening anytime soon: 0%

IMG_0474

I also kind of want to run this marathon in Virginia Beach, if my friend Sam is still up there. I might can even convince him to do it with me. If not, I will be doing the Georgia Marathon in Atlanta with MH.

Thanks, Runner’s World. You make me want to run every day, all the time.

My sister also wants to do the Nashville Half in April.. so of course I said yes…

Also, thanks to this post by this girl, I really kind of want to do an Ironman. So I looked up the website and registering for one Ironman costs almost 2 grand. UMMMMMM ABOUT THAT.

Maybe I’ll just stick to my marathon obsession for now…

Dramatic Potato

I feel like there is just something dramatic about the following photo.

DSC_0049

Anyway.

I’ve noticed potatoes sliced up like this all over Pinterest, so I decided to try it myself. I made a bunch of thin slices not-all-the-way-through the potato, baked it in the oven for a bit, and topped it with some tastiness.

DSC_0057

Melty jack cheese and spicy chili.. mm. Next to a bed of greens, I had an easy, semi-fast dinner.

DSC_0058

I actually couldn’t eat the whole potato, so I had some for lunch the next day. Just as wonderful.

In other, random news, I can’t stop listening to Paper Route.

Hope everyone had a happy Columbus Day Monday!

Velo Fellow

Yesterday, there was a LivingSocial deal to the Velo Fellow. I had never been to the new-to-Greenville eatery, but I’ve wanted to try it out, so I bought the deal. Little did I know the opportunity would come quickly!

IMG_0466

Sidenote: I’ve known for awhile that the word “velo” is French for bicycle. In college, my friend Sam would come over and re-arrange these metal letters I have to say velo. I still have the letters today!

IMG_0473

Anyway, I met a friend for lunch and we walked to the underground pub-style place. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and we chose an indoor booth. The inside was fantastic, with a bunch of knickknacks and mismatched lights and chairs. My kinda place! I especially loved the huge bookshelf on one wall.

IMG_0468 IMG_0471

The menu was eclectic, hosting a wealth of fare, including Indian, American, Greek, German, Cajun, etc. It was also very vegetarian friendly, which is obviously super important to me. I’m working on year two as a veg! :)

IMG_0457

Our waitress first explained that they have “old timey” sodas. I normally don’t splurge on drinks, but since I had a deal I decided to get a cherry soda. Glass look familiar? I’ve had the brand before, so I knew it would be good. Soda is always a little too sweet with my meals, though.

IMG_0459

An appetizer to start? Of course! Brie + sliced fruit + toasted baguette slices = heaven. Seriously, this was so, so good. The brie was warm and melty and paired with the fruit atop a crusty baguette.. yum.

IMG_0460

For my meal, I got the grilled cheese. They give you a selection of certain meats, cheeses and spreads and you can pick a few to make a melted sandwich. I went with the olive tapenade and greyuere. It sure doesn’t look very appetizing, but I assure you it was fan.tas.tic.

IMG_0464

A side salad for some green. The dressing was a basil bleu cheese. Must re-create!

IMG_0462

One of the best parts of the restaurant? They shop at World Market! Swoon!

IMG_0467

Overall, I was impressed by The Velo Fellow. There were several things on the menu I’d like to try, so I think I’ll definitely be back for more.

IMG_0472

Maybe I’ll bike there next time! :-D

Sunday Brunch

As part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program, I was sent two Bauducco Panettones.

DSC_0052

The package also came with some recipe ideas. The first one was french toast. Sold! I soaked slices of the cake in a flax egg and pan-cooked them for a few minutes on each side.

DSC_0073

The cakes were okay on their own, but french toasted, they were quite tasty. I could have left the syrup off though, as they were quite sweet to begin with.

Panettones are sweet breads usually eaten around Christmas or New Year’s (both are rapidly approaching.. is it really October already!?). They’re super popular in Italy and several other countries, including Malta, Brazil & Switzerland.

DSC_0054

I was sent two varieties, one with chocolate chips and the other with raisins and dried fruit. Not really sure why the chocolate chip one had a pack of silica gel in it though. When my sister was little, she found a pack of silica gel in a store and decided it would be a great snack. My mom wasn’t too happy about that and I wasn’t too happy about having to immediately accompany them to the hospital. Needless to say, she survived, but I’ve since learned that silica gel is not, in fact, a tasty snack. :)

Back to the ol’ grind tomorrow. Monday, you always approach way too fast.

Happy Drink Beer Day

Obviously, I celebrated.

I picked up a variety pack from World Market a few weeks ago, and I’m just now getting around to the last few of the 6-pack.

IMG_0426 IMG_0427

Both were delicious. I enjoyed the Brooklyn slightly more than the Turbodog, but I’m pretty sure that’s just because I’m partial to New York. :)

A few days ago I had an Extra Stout, which was also surprisingly good. I need to brush up on my beer knowledge.

IMG_0421

Also, FYI. If it’s two days before your birthday, you should probably visit this website and sign up for a bunch of free stuff. Let’s just say I’m going to Firehouse Subs on Friday and I’m set in free ice cream for a few months, at least.
