Whenever I think of animal crackers, I think of that annoying Shirley Temple commercial. You know, the one where she’s singing “animal crackers in my soup, monkeys and rabbits loop the loop..”

Now it will be stuck in your head for approximately 38 years.

I also think of high fructose corn syrup and more ingredients than I can pronounce. Unfortunately, that’s true of most processed foods these days. Thank goodness for Whole Foods.

I went there yesterday to pick up a few things after coming home from Atlanta, including these lovelies. Incase you missed it, yesterday was cheese ball day. The cheesemonger at Whole Foods sort of laughed at me when I asked for a cheese ball. Then he told me they only have them at holiday time. Oh well. A mozzarella ball is just as delicious. I have a feeling this project will leave me with a random assortment of food.

Back to the cookies. Does anyone else find the concept of animal crackers a bit morbid? Who came up with this idea? Hey, lets make cookies in fun animal shapes so kids can bite their heads off?

Oh, I guess adults bite their heads off too. :-)

Also, who thinks it’s absolutely hilarious and ironic that most animal crackers are vegan?
